Unite: 800% rise in strikes for bus staff

- BY GRAHAM HISCOTT Head of Business

THE number of strikes by bus workers has soared by more than 800% in three years, the union Unite said.

In 2019, there were 11 disputes but the figure has soared to 102 since August 2021 when Sharon Graham took over as leader.

Ms Graham said: “Unite is turning towards what it says on the trade union tin – fighting for jobs, pay and conditions.”

Unite claims it has helped thousands of bus workers, including 250 Stagecoach staff in Hull who this month got a twoyear pay deal worth 20%.

In August more than 2,000 Arriva North West members accepted a deal worth £2,900 a year.

Arriva bus drivers in North London also secured an improved 11% pay offer.
