Labour: Tory Brexit bonfire will slash rights of workers
TORY MPs have been accused of plotting to slash workers’ rights after voting down a bid to stop employment protections expiring after Brexit.
A government bill is set to “sunset” a raft of laws written into UK law from the EU in a “Brexit bonfire”.
They include the right to paid holidays, rest breaks and maternity rights. Labour MPs debating the bill in a Commons committee suggested a change to keep the regulations written into law and stop them expiring at the end of next year. Tory MPs voted against the amendment, which fell by nine votes to seven. Labour’s Justin Madders told the Mirror: “The Tories are plotting to slash rights at work under cover of darkness.” Tory MP David Jones called it “scaremongering”. The Government insisted it will “continue to protect and enhance workers’ rights”.
