Oldest town changes to newest city

-

COLCHESTER, known as the oldest recorded town in Britain, officially became a city yesterday.

Mayor Tim Young was presented with letters patent, an official document giving city status, which was granted by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The Essex city was the first capital of Roman Britain with more than 2,000 years of history.

Mr Young said: “City Day is a long time coming – a proud moment for us to celebrate all that makes Colchester what it is.”

Council leader David King added: “Becoming a city will further raise that national profile. It will deliver a major boost to the local economy.”
