Cop killer in 2nd life sentence over jail guard assault

US fugitive used metal bar as weapon

A NOTORIOUS thug who shot dead a policeman at a traffic stop has been given a second life sentence for attacking a female prison guard.

Former US Marine David Bieber hit Alison Smith with a home-made pronged metal bar at Long Lartin prison in 2017.

Bieber, 58, was serving a minimum of 37 years at the top security jail in Worcesters­hire for the 2003 murder of West Yorkshire PC Ian Broadhurst.

The drug dealer and steroid addict was convicted of murder and two counts of attempted murder in 2004. A whole-life tariff was cut to 37 years in 2008.

On Tuesday he was found guilty of wounding with intent and possessing an unauthoris­ed weapon. He was given a second life term, with a minimum six years, at Worcester crown court. He will not be eligible for release until his 80s. Bieber faces extraditio­n to the US if he is ever judged safe to be freed.
