365ft furnace brought down
A LANDMARK from the late 1970s is reduced to rubble in seconds.
The explosion to level the 365ft Redcar blast furnace and surrounding structures was heard 23 miles away.
The Teesside furnace was as tall as St Paul’s Cathedral and produced up to 3.6 million tons of iron a year.
The works closed in 2015 and the site will become the Teesworks industrial zone.
Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald called the demolition “the end of an era”.
