1894: England and Yorkshire batsman Herbert Sutcliffe was born. He scored 4,555 runs in 54 Tests and bagged more than 50,000 first-class runs between 1919 and 1945. He died aged 83 in 1978.
2001: Fifteen fans were injured after being hit by a car driven by two-time world champion Carlos Sainz at the Network Q Rally of Great Britain.
2004: Harry Redknapp resigned as manager of Portsmouth after his managerial style was compromised by the appointment of Velimir Zajec as executive director.
