OUR FORCED MARSCH IS JUST TOO OPTIMISTIC

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

JESSE MARSCH claims an arrogant USA team think they can be the best side at the World Cup.

The Americans face England tomorrow after drawing their opening game against Wales and Leeds boss Marsch (above) says the nation is “foolishly optimistic” about their chances.

He was part of Bob Bradley’s coaching team when the USA drew with England at the 2010 World Cup and maintains they believe they can qualify from the group like they did 12 years ago.

Leeds duo Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson hope to figure tomorrow and Marsch admitted: “We’re foolishly optimistic in the US.

“We always think we can be the best, and we expect to be the best – even in this sport, where we are clearly not.

“That’s our arrogance, that’s what we are.

“We will expect to get out of the group and we will expect to win a game or two, even though those expectations are far too high with where we’re at.

“Anytime we play England, everyone in the US gets really excited. I’ll be cheering for the USA and I know it will take their absolute best performance to have a chance.

“But one of the things uniquely American is that sense of fearlessness. We thrive and enjoy the moments when the things are their hardest and when everyone expects us to lose.”

Marsch feels the USA caught England at a good moment in 2010 and claims Gregg Berhalter’s side face an even tougher challenge against the Three Lions.

“I think just the combination of the expectation and the fact the team wasn’t in great form led to England not performing at that World Cup,” he added.

“A lot of their players now are performing at a high level, so the task for the USA is actually bigger this time than it was back in 2010.”
