King greets Crocney at the Palace
KING Charles roared with laughter after catching David Hockney wearing yellow Crocs to a lunch at Buckingham Palace.
The monarch spotted the artist in fluorescent rubber footwear as he welcomed those in the Order of Merit.
His Majesty remarked: “Your yellow galoshes! Beautifully chosen.”
Charles hosted the first lunch of his reign with the individuals of exceptional distinction in the arts, learning, sciences and other areas such as public service.
The order includes six new appointments, chosen by the late Queen. They
were architect Sir David Adjaye, Professor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, Baroness Floella Benjamin, historian Professor Margaret MacMillan, biochemist Sir Paul Nurse and Nobel prize winner Dr Venki Ramakrishnan.
Hockney is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, a professor of nursing, said: “I’m so honoured. I’m just star gazing. It is history.”
Parliamentarian and actress Baroness Benjamin said she was thrilled to be “the first black woman from the Caribbean” to be included in the order.
Sir David Attenborough said of the Order of Merit: “It is a mysterious thing but it works. It is such a variety of people from such a cross section of society.”
