Fairy tales set for unhappy ending
TRADITIONAL childhood fairy tales could be consigned to the dusty shelves of history as youngsters reckon many are old-fashioned.
Others said they perpetuate outdated gender stereotypes and many are sexist.
Hansel and Gretel was deemed the most inappropriate, followed by Little Red Riding Hood and Rumpelstiltskin.
The Snow Queen, The Three Little Pigs and Beauty and the Beast were also viewed as having a sinister side, according to Gen Z, who are aged 10-25. Research of 2,000 people of all ages also revealed the nation’s most loved fairy tales, with Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves emerging as the top stories.
Also among beloved tales, in the survey by Smart lighting brand Twinkly, was The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Rapunzel and The Ugly Duckling.
But almost half of those polled agree fairy tales are helpful for teaching about morals.
