Heartbreak as pupils skip class

- BY ADAM ASPINALL

WELSH fans suffered World Cup heartache yesterday but remained fiercely proud of their national heroes.

Thousands of pupils were allowed to watch the match in school after captain Gareth Bale had begged headteachers to show the game, saying it was a “history lesson”.

Hundreds of schools agreed to the idea with many pupils dressed in red shirts and bucket hats for the morning – as well scores of pubs and fan zones across the nation which were packed for the 10am kick off.

At Rhiwbeina primary in Cardiff, the pupils had been able to watch Wales train at the City Stadium so they were gutted when their team were beaten 2-0 by Iran.

But nothing could hold back their enthusiasm for their team.

Pupil Darcy Stone said: “I think it is amazing they got to Qatar and even if they don’t get past the group stages, it is still amazing.” Max Northam added: “Hopefully we

can pull something out against England.” Wilf Breed added: “The world cup is full of surprises.” Elsewhere there was a similar reaction in fan parks which dotted the country from Wrexham to Cardiff and Swansea.

In Cardiff, builder Alasdair Laugharne, 51, said: “It’s a shame but we’ll bounce back.” And in Wrexham, Aled Young, 21, said: “No matter the result we are still watching Wales at a World Cup which is amazing. “England next though, you never know.”
