Appeal court throws out Down’s case

A WOMAN with Down’s syndrome has lost a Court of Appeal challenge over legislation allowing babies with the condition to be aborted up until birth.

Heidi Crowter, 27, took legal action against the Department of Health in a bid to remove part of the Abortion Act she deemed an “instance of inequality”.

Judges ruled last year that the legislation aims to strike a balance between the rights of the unborn child and of women.

The Court of Appeal reconsidered the case brought by Ms Crowter, from Coventry, in July.

But yesterday, three senior judges dismissed it, saying the Act does not interfere with the rights of the “living disabled”.
