GEORDIE ONE THAT I WANT

- BY ROSS HEPPENSTALL

TWO-GOAL hero Michael Smith is dreaming of a trip to St James’ Park.

The Geordie striker came off the bench in the second half with Darren Moore’s side trailing and struck twice late on to seal the win. Smith (above) was born and raised in Newcastle and nurtured at the Wallsend Boys Club, which produced the likes of Alan Shearer and Michael Carrick.

Smith, who began his professional career at Darlington, said: “The magic of the FA Cup is still there for me.

“I remember watching it as a kid with my dad.

“I love it and to get Newcastle away would be a dream. I’ve never managed to get there as a player – but have plenty of times as a Newcastle fan. Alan Shearer was the main man when I was growing up. It would be lovely to get there before I retire.”

Nigel Clough’s League Two play-off hopefuls led at the break through a George Lapslie strike.

But Moore brought on Smith and captain Barry Bannan and Wednesday eventually took control.

Smith, 31, twice fired home in clinical fashion from left-wing crosses by Marvin Johnson.

Smith’s late double left Lapslie devastated as his team failed to pull off an upset in front of 4,000 travelling fans. The Stags midfielder said: “They were unreal. To get a win here would’ve been something for them to remember. It’s just a bad end to the day.”
