GASS BURNER

Ahadme on fire as Ipswich torch Buxton’s dreams

- BY ROBERT DUNFORD

KIERAN McKENNA predicted a bright future for fit-again Gassan Ahadme as he helped Ipswich cruise past non-League Buxton.

The Moroccan striker seized his chance after netting in his first start for the Tractor Boys after joining from Burton in September.

Ahadme (right) fractured his foot after just three games for his new club, but looked the part at Portman Road yesterday.

And Ipswich boss McKenna thinks the forward, 22, will prove a useful addition to his side’s promotion push in League One.

He said: “Gassan isn’t lacking in confidence. But, of course, in your first start it’s nice to get off the mark with a goal. As time goes on he will co-ordinate his movements with the other players better and get in more dangerous positions.”

Ipswich eased into the third round for the first time since 2019 as their National League North visitors were put to the sword. They had to wait until 33 minutes to finally get the reward for their dominance.

Conor Chaplin fired in low after a fine first touch from a Wes Burns cross. And five minutes later, Ahadme bundled home from close range after a Kyle Edwards delivery.

Any lingering doubts over the result were ended on 73 minutes when Chaplin floated a delightful effort from the edge of the box into the top corner.

And Ipswich sub Kayden Jackson made it four in stoppage time when he picked up a loose ball from just inside the opposing half and ran on to slot home.

McKenna added: “We knew what we needed to do. Of course, you want a professional performance, and you know that you will have most of the play.

“It’s about trying to create chances, to score goals and make sure you give nothing away at the other end.”

Buxton chief Jamie Vermiglio could not repeat his 2021 feat with fellow part-timers Chorley, after taking them to the fourth round, but said “I’m very proud of the players. It was always going to be tough and we were up against it.

“Anyone watching the first 15 minutes could see what we were trying to do, which was to be stubborn. We were relying on a set piece, a free-kick, something to fall for us.”
