Lava warning after volcano blows its top

- BY CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN US Editor

THE world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa in Hawaii, has started to erupt.

The US Geological Survey said lava flows were contained within the summit area and were not threatening communities on the Big Island.

But officials at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory warned residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows to review their eruption preparations.

Scientists have been on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the summit of the 13,679 feet volcano, which last erupted in 1984.

During a 1950 eruption, lava travelled 15 miles to the sea in less than three hours. The Kilauea volcano nearby erupted in 2018, destroying 700 homes.
