Lake District rescue hero Bracken dies

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

A RESCUE dog who saved an OAP from hypothermia has died at the age of 13.

Bracken, a collie, flew in a mountain rescue helicopter and had his own foil-lined sleeping bag.

The “gentle and affectionate” pooch was adopted by handler Elly Whiteford in August 2010, aged 18 months.

In 2014, he qualified as a search dog and joined Keswick Mountain Rescue in the Lake District.

Elly recalled the time Bracken found an elderly man who had been missing for 48 hours one freezing cold December.

She added: “It is an amazing feeling when your dog finds, I was so proud.

“He was my constant companion and partner. I miss him and he will always be with me.”
