TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED
We’ve had historical ghostly tales of sightings in ancient places, but one reader experienced something much closer to home.
Anne Kidman in Usk, Monmouthshire, tells us: “Many years ago when my father, Harold Thomas, had sadly just died in Nevill Hall hospital in Abergavenny, my now late sister Helen and I went to the hospital to pick up his belongings.
“We were in a hallway at the top of the stairs leading down to the ward, when we both stood for a moment to gather ourselves for the job ahead.
All of a sudden, out of nowhere came a man who looked like a hospital porter, whistling The Red Flag as he walked.
“There were blank walls all around us, but he just appeared, and then disappeared in seconds into nowhere, whistling as he went.
“My father was a socialist, a strong Labour man and The Red Flag was very significant – it was a tune we had all been brought up with. My sister and I looked at each other, astounded. I said to her, ‘Did that really just happen? And she nodded and replied, ‘Yes! I can’t believe it’.“I then asked, ‘Where did he come from?’ and she laughed and added, ‘And where did he go?’.
“It may sound a bit creepy but to us it felt very much as if Dad was still around and trying to lighten the situation for us.
“It’s still one of life’s mysteries and I have spent over 20 years trying to fathom out what happened that day. But whatever it was, it brought us great comfort.”
