RACIST JIBES HIT KEEPER

- BY NEIL MOXLEY

CANADA keeper Milan Borjan was racially abused as Les Rouges were sent packing from the World Cup.

That followed controversy stirred up by his boss John Herdman (below) who had claimed Canada were out to ‘F*** Croatia’.

Red Star Belgrade keeper Borjan (above) was taunted from the stands by Croatian fans.

A flag bearing the branding of tractor manufacturer John Deere bore the words ‘Knin ’95 – nothing runs like Borjan’ somehow made it past the stewards.

That was a reference to Operation Storm, carried out by the Croatian army when many Serbs were victims of ethnic cleansing and Borjan himself was forced to flee.

Some Serbs left on tractors – hence the reference on the flag – and as well as being abused verbally from the stands and with the banner, worse was to follow for Borjan.

His phone number was leaked and he received over 2,500 abusive messages after the game.

Borjan confirmed he would not be speaking to the Canadian FA about the issue, but clearly wanted to play down the incidents when quizzed after the game which Croatia won 4-1.

He said: “These are children who do not know what it is and how it was and that says everything about them.”
