I’ll be in Vegas ... but my wife will be policing

SIR Rod Stewart has ruled himself out of the line-up for the King’s Coronation concert but wife Penny will be there in her capacity as a special constable.

The 78-year-old rocker will be in Las Vegas on May 7 as part of his residency at Caesars Palace, while model and TV star Penny Lancaster will be on duty back home.

The concert in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Sunday May 7, the day after the Coronation itself at Westminster Abbey, will bring together “musical icons and contemporary stars”.

But Sir Rod, who was knighted in 2016, will not be among them.

The singer, who led a singalong of Sweet Caroline at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert outside Buckingham Palace last year, said: “No, I won’t be there.

“I think I have worn out my royal welcome. I think I will leave it to someone else. I will be in Las Vegas.

“But my wife will be on duty as a policewoman though.” Penny completed her training to become a special police constable for the City of London Police in April 2021. She was on duty for the Queen’s state funeral last September, at the barriers near Queen Victoria’s Memorial outside the Palace.

The Palace has yet to reveal the names of the performers for the concert. But Sir Rod was convinced Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney had signed up. He said: “Paul McCartney is going to do it, I know that. That is all I know.”

MACCA

There have been previous reports that Macca was top of the organisers’ wishlist but sources close to the musician said he had yet to be formally approached.

This week members of the public were invited to apply for free Coronation concert tickets, to be allocated based on where they live, with 5,000 pairs of tickets up for grabs. The ballot will be open until the end of this month. A 74-piece orchestra comprising the Massed Bands of the Household Division will lead the festivities, joined by the Countess of Wessex’s String Orchestra. They will provide backing to “some of the world’s biggest entertainers” on a series of well-known classics. The concert will begin in the afternoon and last into the late evening.
