WWII Bomber Command vet dies aged 101
A SECOND World War hero and Bomber Command pilot has died at 101.
Flight Lieutenant Fred Hill joined the RAF aged 18 at the start of the war.
He served two tours with Bomber Command and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for “acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement in flight”.
In 1942 he wed Roma and they had two sons.
He left the RAF in 1946 and became a teacher, and was later head of Tamar High School in Plymouth.
His sons died in their 50s and Roma died in 2009.
Fred had been living in a residential home in Exeter.
He is survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
