At last, a day to make us proud

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ FINALLY Great Britain has something to be proud of, the memory of a magnificent Coronation.

It was perfect, except for the weather, and you could only marvel at the skill of the organisers both inside and outside Westminster Abbey.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has his critics, but he conducted the difficult ceremony with consummate skill and with a smile when required – while the various TV commentators knew when to stay silent.

As for the thousands of troops involved in the parade after the ceremony, they made you proud to be British. Millions watching on TV all over the world will now know we can do more than stage strikes over here.

God bless the King and Queen... and the organisers of this stunning event. I’m proud to be British

■ What an awe-inspiring occasion the Coronation was. All the regalia, the gold and sparkling jewels, the solemnity of the ceremony and the King’s pledge not to be served but to serve, along with the beautiful choral music helped make it an unforgettable spectacle for the millions watching. The Gold State coach procession to the Palace with members of our Armed Forces al l marching in time and the balcony appearance in front of the cheering crowd made me so proud to be British. What other country could pull off an event of this magnitude? None that I can think of. Long live His Majesty the King.

■ The fact we are suffering 13 years of Tory mayhem and austerity has probably got a lot more to do with people’s enthusiasm for the Coronation than anything else. Having been just about managing under Theresa May we are struggling to survive under Rishi Sunak, so there’s nothing left to celebrate.

We must be careful what we wish for regarding the debate over the monarchy’s future. Look at the major self-harm we inflicted on ourselves with Brexit. The thought of a republic with Sunak, Johnson or Rees Mogg in the hot seat makes a monarchy with King Charles III at the helm a much safer and happier proposition.

■ Thankfully, the Coronation of King Charles was a resounding success and, apart from the rain, it all went according to plan.

The ceremony was a reminder of all that brings pride and honour to our nation. It was staged to perfection with all the pomp and splendour these type of occasions engender. I could only view the spectacle with a sense of awe. Long live the King.

■ What a wonderful spectacle the Coronation of King Charles III was at Westminster Abbey, steeped in centuries-old tradition.

Charles comes to the throne with a controversial past and in times of hardship for the people of this country, so let’s hope he keeps to his pledge not to be served but to serve and become a King of which we can be proud.

Good luck, Charles.

■ To quote a famous song by Carly Simon, Nobody Does It Better. We have shown the world why there is a Great in Great Britain.

The crowning ceremony and the parade afterwards will live long in the memories of the millions who watched it.

■ My wife - an NHS worker - and I were in Weston-super-Mare the day before the Coronation and we were discussing how the money could be spent. I saw a couple living in a bus shelter which sickened me and I’m sure there are plenty of others having to live in such awful circumstances.

I’m not anti-Royal but surely this is where taxpayers’ money should be spent – not on a load of toffs having a good old jolly?

Chris Morris, Solihull, West Mids

■ The £250 million cost of the Coronation I’m sure will be more than recouped through tourism. There’s also the billions the extra Bank Holiday and events will generate for the hospitality sector.

This is our history and heritage and we should be proud.

■ At my local club we watched Melbourne Storm play South Sydney in Australian rugby league. This wasn’t a deliberate snub to the Royal Family, it’s just no one was that bothered about them.
