Miriam the Meep
National treasure Miriam Margolyes will play a fan favourite in a Doctor Who 60th anniversary special.
The 82-year-old will provide the voice for the Gremlin-like Beep the Meep, which looks cute but is far from it.
Previously, the creature has only appeared in comic strip form, where it was a hit with fans.
One source said show runner Russell T Davies often went to the wider Whoniverse for inspiration. They said: “Beep the Meep was one of the most popular creations. Younger viewers will love Beep... but appearances can be deceptive and it’s as deadly as a Dalek or Cyberman.”
And they added: “Miriam is the perfect choice to bring this new monster to the screen.”
The specials are due to air in the autumn as the show marks 60 years since its first episode aired in 1963. Last month, Harry Potter star Miriam was admitted to hospital for heart surgery.
