Zara killer should get full-life term

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ The five-year reduction in Jordan McSweeney’s 38-year sentence for killing Zara Aleena shows exactly what is wrong with our justice system (Mirror, Nov 4).

He’d already threatened five women earlier the same night before attacking Zara and had been released from prison just days earlier.

The Appeal Court judges based their sentence on the fact that Zara was likely to have been unconscious during the attack but this shouldn’t matter one iota. She was killed in the most horrendous way. McSweeney should have got more years, not less.

What a message to send out to killers. I’m flabbergasted and disgusted by Lady Chief Justice Dame Sue Carr’s decision.

John Symonds, Wisbech, Cambs

■ What were the three judges thinking when they reduced the sentence of an evil killer of an innocent young woman who had her whole life to look forward to? McSweeny’s sentence should have been increased to a whole-life term – a life for a life.

To inflict 46 separate injuries on an innocent person and to have your sentence reduced because there was no “additional suffering” as she was unconscious is an unbelievable pronouncement. McSweeney didn’t care whether Zara was suffering or not. I feel so sorry for her poor family because they must be devastated.

Harry Wheeler, Bridgwater Somerset

■ I totally agree it’s rough justice that killer Jordan McSweeney had his sentence reduced because the Appeal Court judges ruled the victim did not suffer “inordinately” during the horrific nine-minute attack. What were these judges thinking of?

If they had lost one of their daughters this way I’m sure they would not have reduced the sentence. I’m not surprised Zara’s family is furious. So would I be if it was my daughter.

Instead of reducing his sentence they should have increased it. It’s just a pity they can’t be overruled.

Ronald Hanks, Winchester, Hants

■ What is the matter with these appeal judges? How much more do they think poor Zara Aleena should have suffered? It’s time for killers to get a whole life sentence for their crime. No right of appeal, no time off for good behaviour. They should remain in prison their whole lives.

The victims’ families have to suffer a life sentence for their actions, so why should the killers have anything less?

Marian Hernes, Sutton South London

■ The fact that a cowardly killer’s sentence has been cut because the victim was unconscious and didn’t suffer “inordinantly” is an absolute disgrace.

Perhaps Suella Braverman could now step in and do something useful for a change to right this wrong, starting with re-educating the judges? I won’t hold my breath.

Mick Hall, Preston, Lancs

■ I’m livid at the Appeal Court judges’ ruling. They are basically saying you will get a shorter sentence providing the victim is unconscious. This evil man who attacked an innocent young woman should have been punished with a full-life sentence.

That’s the problem with our justice system, the punishment rarely fits the crime.

Keith Robinson, Gosport, Hants

■ It’s an absolute travesty of justice that killer Jordan McSweeney has had his sentence for killing Zara Aleena reduced on appeal. This sends totally the wrong message to sex attackers and killers. My heart goes out to Zara’s poor family.
