Cruella opens up Tory divide

-

■ Suella Braverman didn’t pull her punches in her resignation letter to the Prime Minister, accusing him of betrayal and condemning his leadership as weak.

This looks like being the first shot in what could be a protracted war between Braverman’s supporters and those who side with Rishi Sunak.

I feel the PM will find it almost impossible to recover a shred of his reputation in light of Braverman’s assault on his character. It’s hard to imagine Sunak hanging on to his job to lead his party into the next general election.

Michael Smith, Chatham, Kent

■ If anybody is in any doubt about Rishi Sunak’s abilities then I suggest they read Suella Braverman’s resignation letter in full. It is scathing in the extreme and clearly highlights that his own MPs think he is a weak, indecisive, incompetent un-elected Prime Minister.

So much so that no-confidence letters are already starting to go in.

Sunak is clearly regarded among some Tories as simply a figurehead who is happy to sit in No 10 going through the motions.

■ After her blistering attack on the Prime Minister, sacked home secretary Suella Braverman has dealt a near-fatal blow to a party that is now putting on an unconvincing show of unity.

Did Ms Braverman deliver on any of her own pledges while in office? I don’t think she did and she has now put paid to any future

ambitions she may have to become leader herself, which can only be a good thing.

■ Former home secretary Suella Braverman always spoke openly on many touchy political problems. Her words and strategies on illegal immigration were often met with objections, even from some Tories.

If truth be known many people agreed with her plans to stop the unsustainable number of illegal immigrants arriving daily in small dangerous rubber dinghies.

She also said protests shouldn’t go ahead on the weekend we would honour our war dead, which echoed the sentiments of many.

Neil Atherton, St Helens Merseyside

■ What an absolute farce as the Tories descend into civil war. Braverman’s scathing attack on the Prime Minister goes to prove he

should have sacked her in the beginning as she’s totally unsuited to high office. All the Tories care about is saving their own skins, meanwhile the country goes to pot.

When are the people going to get the chance to have their say and vote them out for good?

George Lindsay, Doncaster

■ I was astounded by Suella Braverman’s attack on Rishi Sunak. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking that they were reading about kids squabbling in a school playground rather than the people who are supposed to be running the country.

They need to grow up, stop the pettiness and get on with the job they are paid a lot of money to do. I despair!

D Richens, South East London

■ There is one simple response to your headline The Tories are revolting, and that is, “Yes, they are!”

The sooner they go, the better, and we need then for Starmer to get his finger out and bring in proportional representation to keep the Tories out for good.
