Vallance reveals they didn’t care

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ THE revelation from the Covid inquiry that Rishi Sunak apparently wanted to just “let people die” rather than impose a second lockdown is damning.

As a government responsible for our safety, they should have been trying to keep as many of their citizens alive as possible.

But what can one expect from these multi-millionaire, public school-educated Tory toffs? They generally only look after their own.

After all, Sunak’s Eat Out To Help Out scheme was only really designed to keep Tory-supporting business owners afloat.

The then-chancellor completely failed to provide poor working folks with the money they needed to self-isolate with Covid.

It stinks, and why we aren’t all clamouring for an immediate general election beats me.

■ At last, the scientists are giving evidence to the Covid inquiry. Former chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance noted Boris Johnson was completely out of his depth and ignored the scientists’ advice for an early lockdown. Rishi Sunak was no better, reportedly saying it was OK if people died.

These two, along with former health secretary Matt Hancock and others in that Cabinet, should be held accountable for the damage they caused. It’s incredible to think that Sunak is still running the country.

■ The Covid inquiry is another waste of taxpayers’ money and lines the pockets of the legal profession. No one could have got it 100% right and mistakes were inevitable.

Lockdown was always going to be too late or too early for some. No one forced anyone to eat out, it was our decision as adults.

I ate out but kept to the social distancing rules, wore a mask and picked a quiet restaurant. No one can foresee the future and we all make errors. The final choice was our own.

■ Sir Patrick Vallance confirmed what everyone knew – Johnson was clueless during the pandemic and Sunak’s Eat Out To Help Out helped cause a second wave.

That Johnson can walk away from this and not face consequences defies belief.

The man is irresponsible and for him to reportedly say the elderly should be left to die is awful.

■ How unlucky can a nation be to have Johnson, Sunak and Hancock in the three most important positions during the Covid crisis?

How many people died because of their attitude to the virus?

The evidence from the Covid inquiry is painful to hear. How can they sleep knowing their actions caused so much harm to so many?

■ As the Covid inquiry reveals the monumental incompetence of Johnson, Sunak, Hancock et al, I am reminded of Johnson’s final few weeks in No10 and his supporters insisting he “got the big calls right”.

I wonder if they still believe this, or indeed if they ever did?

Stuart Magrath, Wigan

■ Most of those who were severely affected or died from Covid were working class, so it’s no wonder that Johnson and his cohorts, including the present Prime Minister, didn’t appear to care.

Let’s hope that at the next general election people don’t forget this. Les Wellburn, Middlesbrough
