Knife murderer probed on Roy Whiting jail stabbing
A PRISONER suspected of stabbing child killer Roy Whiting is a murderer who was obsessed with the horror film Psycho, the Mirror can reveal.
Andrew Light, who is serving a life sentence for knifing his roommate to death, has been linked to the February attack on Sarah Payne’s killer in HMP Wakefield.
Whiting was left covered in blood after the frenzied stabbing inside the maximum security jail.
Now the Mirror can reveal Light is at the centre of the investigation, more than two decades after he stabbed his gay lover to death in the flat they shared.
Light’s trial was told that during interviews in 2002, he told officers that killing Richard Edwards, 53, was the best feeling he ever had.
He said had been craving to kill someone after watching Psycho III on loop. After his knife snapped in his victim’s skull, Light continued with another blade.
He said: “I could hear the music of Psycho playing over and over while I was stabbing him. He fell on the floor and I kept on stabbing him. I wanted to hurt him.”
A source said: “Given Light’s history, Whiting was lucky to escape with his life.”
Light’s trial at Wolverhampton crown court in 2002, heard that Mr Edwards was stabbed more than 30 times, with wounds to his head, face, back and chest in April 2001.
Handing him a life sentence at the time, Judge Michael Mott said: “This was a ferocious attack.”
The day after the murder, Light went for breakfast in a cafe then calmly turned himself in to police.
During a five-day trial, medical experts said he was schizophrenic and had personality disorders.
But a psychiatric nurse told the court he had faked his illness.
Light denied murder but admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. After just three hours a jury found him guilty of murder.
Whiting snatched eight-yearold Sarah from a country lane near her grandparents’ home where she had been playing with her siblings in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex, in July 2000. He was convicted of her murder in 2001.
