CHANGING O’ THE GUARD
RUGBY SCOTLAND’S NEW NO.2 Vern lands Jason as Dunc joins Gunners
SCOTLAND supremo Vern Cotter has lured old mate Jason O’Halloran to Murrayfield as his No.2. The swoop for his fellow New Zealander was revealed as it was confirmed former Calcutta Cup hero Duncan Hodge will switch from the national set-up to become Edinburgh backs coach. But O’Halloran, who has been in charge of Manawatu Turbos, won’t arrive until after the World Cup.
The Kiwi hit the headlines by inspiring the Turbos to their first provincial title for 38 years and is proud of the legacy he will leave behind.
O’Halloran, 43, said: “As hard as it is to leave I have had a great time in this environment and had the pleasure of working with outstanding people.
“It has been humbling to be part of this proud province. It’s great to see the development of local talent.”
Manawatu chief executive John Knowles added: “We are pleased for Jason to get an international position but sad to be losing such a quality coach.
“Jason goes down in history in being the first man to lead us to a national title in a generation.”
Hodge is returning to the club he spent most of his career at and can’t wait to start working with the Gunners stars.
The 40-year-old, who scored all of Scotland’s points in the shock 19-13 triumph over England at Murrayfield 15 years ago, said: “Edinburgh have been a massive part of my life.
“Having played 11 seasons of rugby for them I’m looking forward to being there again.”
Cotter believes the move will be a success for Hodge and is sad to see him leave the Scotland set-up.
He said: “Duncan is a very good coach and I’ve enjoyed working with him as a kicking specialist.
“As an ex-player he has always held this desire to coach Edinburgh.
“This move gives him an opportunity to coach continuously at pro level.
“He’ll be working with guys who are, or will become, Scotland players and knows what skill sets are important to play at that level. He will do an excellent job.”
