Kellie: Gary will head to the US
BACK when she was able to be Frank, fight promoter and manager Kellie Maloney guided Lennox Lewis to the heavyweight championship of the world.
Now she intends to ensure unbeaten Scottish prospect Gary Cornish follows in Lewis’s footsteps by living the American dream. Maloney insists the only way for the 28-year-old from Inverness to fulfil his potential is to head for the USA and she has already opened discussions with some of the best trainers across the Atlantic.
Cornish faces Hungarian Zoltan Csala for the vacant IBO International heavyweight tit le at Bellahouston Sports Centre tomorrow night and Maloney said: “I’m currently in talks with three different trainers.
“I’m a great believer heavyweights are developed in the States.
“The problem we have with Gary is getting suitable sparring partners because there aren’t any in Scotland. If he was over in America it wouldn’t be a problem.
“With Lennox Lewis, if his sparring partner got hurt we could get another one within 24 hours because they are two-a-penny in the USA.
“The final part of his education, provided he continues to develop, will take place in the States.” cost me. I bought three new carburettors during the winter, even though my old ones were OK.
“I didn’t actually need the new carbs but I bit the bullet and thought I’ll get new ones.
“We’ve been trying to work out why the engines were blowing and Phil asked about my carbs.
“He said his son Jason never used the spiral needles that came with the new carbs and always replaced them with rubber-tip needles.
“That’s why too much fuel has been getting into the engines and making them overheat.
“It’s been a real financial blow. But it’s extra frustrating because it’s made my form for Glasgow suffer – yet I’ve been going well for 13. But hopefully now I can start scoring big again for Glasgow and get back to being No.1.”
Meanwhile, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Berwick will be hoping for a representative at the British Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff on July 4.
Lawson, Craig Cook and Ben Barker have all qualified for the British Final on June 15 and if any of those three finish as top Brits behind current GP stars Tai Woffinden and Chris Harris they will get a wildcard slot for Cardiff.
Monarchs captain Cook leads his side into their KO Cup clash with Sheffield at Armadale tonight while Berwick take on Redcar at Shielfield tomorrow night.
