hasn’t been near the place for months, years even. And the shabby appearance of the Ibrox state room only underlines the malaise that has set in on and off the field in recent years.

The stadium needs revamped, Murray Park needs a refurb, the playing squad needs investment and Rangers need to be back at the highest level as soon as possible, challengin­g Celtic for the Scottish title and with it the chance of a tilt at the Champions League.

Paul Murray, who has been acting as interim chairman, said: “I guess we will get a honeymoon period but football fans are not renowned for patience and they will soon, rightly so, be looking for the club to start being competitiv­e in the top flight. I don’t think it’s that difficult to be competitiv­e in the Premiershi­p. It won’t take that long to do it.

“We just need to get ourselves organised with a bit of investment required. We need to get other parts of the club right.

“Clearly the benchmark is Celtic. That’s the one fans will look at and there is obviously quite a big gap. That will take some time to build up.”
