JUDO star Stephanie Inglis has thanked the people who donated cash towards her medical care after a freak motorbike accident in Vietnam left her fighting for her life.

Stephanie, from Inverness, was given a one per cent chance of survival and placed in an induced coma after she suffered severe brain injuries in the accident in May. Despite the 27-year-old being in a critical condition, her insurance company refused to pay for her medical care.

Thousands of pounds have since been raised by well-wishers.

The Commonwealth judo star astounded doctors by battling her way out of coma and returning to Scotland to continue her recovery.

In her first TV interview since the accident, Stephanie thanked the thousands of supporters who donated more than £300,000 to pay for her care after it emerged that her travel insurance would not cover her bills. “It’s crazy,” Stephanie told STV. “I can’t get my head round it. It’s just so nice. And all those people that donated sent well wishes.

“If it wasn’t for them I might not even be here today.” Stephanie who won silver at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, said the hardest part was waking up from her coma.

She said: “I just had no memory of anything.”

“It was just people telling me what happened, saying I’d been in a motorbike accident.”

She is now undergoing tough rehab and aims to get back to her judo career.

She said: “I’m already walking. It is a fast recovery - although to me it seems slow.”
