Tap me some cash, my bill for bottled water is £20k

-

A FASCINATING survey has just reported that the average person will spend an incredible amount of money buying something that most of us here can get for nothing by turning on a tap.

The study was carried out by money saving website www. vouchercodespro.co.uk and those questioned were asked about the way they bought water.

The average number of bottles of water purchased in a week was seven and it turns out that the average cost of seven bottles of water is £6.50.

A calculation was then done to work out the total cost of seven bottles of water a week over a lifetime and the calculation was done based on the number of bottles we will drink between the ages of 18 and 80.

The answer? An incredible £20,000.

Water was way behind alcohol with the average spend on alcohol up at around £28 per week, compared to £15.50 for coffee and £6.50 for water, with fizzy drinks coming in at £4.40 per week.

Amazingly, Londoners admitted to spending more than £35 per week buying coffee, more than the national average spend on booze.

Researchers then asked respondents why they bought coffee or water from the shops, given that water at least is still free in most houses and offices. The majority, almost 90 per cent, said they do this because it is convenient, with the other 10 per cent saying that they prefer the taste when they buy it in shops.

Spokesman for www. VoucherCodesPro.co.uk, George Charles, said: “It’s easy to grab a coffee or a bottle of water when you’re on the road, forgetting that you can get both of these things either for free or at a fraction of the price at home.

“Forward planning for trips will help reduce spending on these unnecessary items. Take refillable bottles with you for water and a flask of coffee. People often take for granted the free water they have running from their taps at home.

“Having the odd coffee from Starbucks or Costa is fine but the money spent on these luxuries could go towards something so much more exciting.”
