From Back Page that pig flying past. I’ve no idea where it came from.

“Everybody knew about the rumour apart from the people at Rangers.

“Out of our pay league is a fair comment. I’m bemused to hear some of the stories, including betting being suspended. There is no truth in the story whatsoever.

“It’s great, it’s football, it’s opinion and it’s what people are talking about.

“Common sense prevails here. Robin is hugely talented but he’s contracted to Fenerbahce and I’m sure he’s on a sizeable salary.

“There are some rumours that have a certain substance and others that are beyond belief. I woke up to a battery of text messages and calls.

“Betting had been suspended but I don’t know where it came from.”

Rangers and Celtic used to be able to attract some of the biggest names in football with the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Brian Laudrup, Paolo di Canio and Jorge Cadete playing in Glasgow.

But Warburton admits our clubs are now poor relations due to the flood of TV money down south.

And it will take a seismic shift before the Old Firm can compete for elite players in the transfer market again.

He said: “It’s down to finance, whether that’s a TV deal or whatever. They have to get the finance right.

“Some of the deals down south are incredible, there are some going on at clubs down there that would make your hair curl.

“We have to find a way to bridge the gap, you can’t stop. You hear people saying it’s great to have Rangers back and that’s it. No. You have to go hard again and keep improving it.

“We have shown that young players can come here and be challenged. There is an ignorance about the Scottish game.

“But somehow we have to improve the income. The English market is not abating. Premier League money is increasing next year by about 32 per cent.”

Warburton used to be a city trader and claims the inflated fees in England can’t be good for the long-term health of the game.

He said: “I always look at currency markets. When currency gets to a certain level you have to look at it.

“When we were getting two dollars to the pound everyone was saying, ‘Oh it’s so cheap over there, it’s too good to be true’. Well it is. It’s out of kilter.

“You look at football and say there is too much – it’s too good to be true.

“But right now the Premier League brand is magnificent. You can go anywhere in the world and you’re watching Premier League football.

“The money is mindboggling but the quality of product is ever improving and fair play to them.”
