Tainted honours
OUR honours system is risible and corrupt, commanding the sort of contempt academics have for honorary doctorates or humanitarians for the Nobel Peace Prize. All three should be binned.

A heartless act
IT BROKE my heart to read (Your View, July 26) how reader Scott N’s 10-year-old son’s cat Alfie was knocked down and killed in broad daylight. The evil driver drove off without stopping, leaving poor Alfie to suffer before he died.
The vile heartless scumbag has no conscience. My sympathies are with the family. June Fleming, Musselburgh
Hope for future
LABOUR leadership hopeful Owen Smith is a breath of fresh air who has brought a bit of common sense to his party.
Mr Smith has outlined his brave and very sensible ideas that the devolved governments of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales should all be consulted on UK-wide policy areas.
That sort of thinking could bring about people actually considering that the UK really does have a future. Tom Baxter, Denny
