Boris warned of Brexit risk to economy
TORY buffoon Boris Johnson warned Brexit would cause an “economic shock” and lead to the break-up of the UK – days before backing Leave.
In a draft newspaper article, Johnson wrote of the EU: “This is a market on our doorstep, ready for further exploitation by British firms. The membership fee seems rather small for all that. Why are we so determined to turn our back on it?”
But he chose instead to back Leave in a column highly critical of the EU and the renegotiation deal sought by David Cameron.
Flip-flopping Johnson, who became Foreign Secretary amid the post-referendum chaos in the Tory Party, is now seen as a backer of a “hard Brexit”. He claimed yesterday that he “wrestled with his conscience” adding: “I set (the columns) side by side and it was blindingly obvious what the right thing to do was.”
The secret column is exposed in All Out War, a book on the Brexit campaign.
Most of Johnson’s predictions in his Remain column have turned out to be true. Since the vote to leave the EU, the pound has fallen to historic lows while Nicola Sturgeon has put in place plans for a second independence referendum.
SNP MP Ian Blackford said: “Boris has zero credibility after his leaked article. It demonstrates that for him it was all a game where the prize was the Tory leadership.”
