A VIOLENT thug was still on the loose from jail last night.

The public are being warned not to approach Allan Strachan, 34, who absconded from Castle Huntly open prison, near Dundee.

Strachan, who has links to Glasgow’s Springburn and Castlemilk, was reported missing early on Thursday.

He was jailed for attempted murder at the High Court in Glasgow in 2010. Strachan repeatedly stamped and kicked William McAlear on the head.

The September 2008 attack, involving Strachan and two other men, was caught on CCTV.

Strachan is 6ft 3in, stocky and bald. Police are urging anyone who sees him to call 101.

The hunt follows a series of incidents involving inmates failing to return to the open prison in recent months.

In October, knifeman Brian Traynor, 37, went on the run while on leave from Castle Huntly. He was later found in Cumbernauld.

Traynor, of Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, slashed a 77-year-old woman in 2007 and held a knife to another OAP’s throat. He was jailed for nearly five years. His latest sentence was for a separate offence, details of which are unknown.

And sex attacker Brian Travers, 43, absconded in July, before being traced by police.

Killer Simon Brown, 45, was arrested by police in January after failing to return from home leave last Christmas.

He was traced to England.
