HAMMOND’S AN ICE WALLY

MELTDOWN STAR ACCUSED OF HOMOPHOBIA

- ASHLEIGH RAINBIRD

MOTORMOUTH Richard Hammond has been accused of “homophobic innuendo” after he claimed straight men don’t eat ice cream. The former Top Gear star was responding to a comment made by Jeremy Clarkson on the latest episode of car programme The Grand Tour, aired on Amazon Prime.

Clarkson pointed at a RollsRoyce and said: “The only problem is that in one of those, you couldn’t enjoy a chocolate Magnum ice cream.”

Hammond, 47, replied: “It’s all right, I don’t eat ice cream. It’s something to do with being straight.”

Clarkson, 56, asked: “What do you mean? You’re saying all children are homosexual?”

Hammond replied, saying: “Ice cream is a bit… you know,” before adding: “There’s nothing wrong with it, but a grown man eating an ice cream – it’s that way, rather than that way.”

LGBT rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said: “It’s a perverse world when everyday pleasures like ice cream become the butt of homophobic innuendo.”

Charity Stonewall said: “The words were not just ridiculous, but chosen to mock and belittle.”
