The queen of all princesses

- COMMENT By film critic Chris Hunneysett

CARRIE Fisher was the daughter of Hollywood royalty but achieved an influence which far surpassed her parents.

Aged 19, in her first major role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars, Carrie was thrust into the global limelight.

In her white dress and bagel hairstyle, she achieved a level of fame normally reserved for real royalty and her likeness was used to sell everything from wallpaper to lunchboxes.

Leia was feisty, sharp, funny, independent, feminine and sexy. She insulted her captors, withstood interrogation and had to improvise her own rescue.

Carrie became a positive role model for young girls and won the hearts of millions of men.

There was a poignant return to the Star Wars universe in 2015’s The Force Awakens.

But Carrie’s legacy is that princesses have had to reinvent themselves with Leia’s attitude.

It’s thanks to her enduring and forceful spirit that princesses everywhere will never be the same again.
