THE death of Royle Family actress Liz Smith saddened our readers of the Daily Record website and our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Liz, who played Nana, passed away on Christmas Eve, aged 95.

It came less than six months after the show’s writer, Caroline Aherne, who played Denise, died of cancer.

On our Facebook page, Joyce Dowling said: “Aw. RIP Nana. Loved the Royle Family. It’s been one sad year.” William James Barker added: “Nana reunited with Denise. RIP Liz and thank you.”

Lorna Skillen said: “I loved her. Good age.”

Anne Robinson added: “Wonderful actress.”

Brian Mcluckie summed up the thoughts of many, saying: “Another one taken this year. RIP xx”

Barbara Robertson said: “What a great actress she was. Another sad loss.”

Gaz Tudhope added: “A great star and one who boosted humour to an already great comedy. God bless you, Nana.”

And Alex Macfarlane said: “Played a great part as Nana. RIP. She will be missed.”
