Festival bosses plan to make campsite over-18 next year

FESTIVAL bosses may ban under-18s from the T in the Park campsite next year.

The proposals to improve safety at Scotland’s biggest music festival come after two 17-year-olds died at the campsite last year.

Peter McCallum and Megan Bell were found dead separately before the festival began. Their deaths were presumed after postmortems to be drug-related.

The festival is due to return in 2018 after taking a break this year to address issues around its move to the latest site at Strathallan, Perthshire.

Geoff Ellis, chief executive of organisers DF Concerts & Events, confirmed yesterday they were having discussions about restricting the campsite to adults.

But it is understood there are no proposals to restrict access to the festival itself.

He said: “What we have seen in recent years is more 16 and 17-year-olds going a bit crazy. So let’s make the campsite over-18.

“It does mean families can’t come to the event like they have done traditionally since 1994. But that is something we have to do.

“You do all you can when you are organising an event to try to keep people safe.”

The festival has an open age policy, with under-18s having to be accompanied by someone over 21.

Ellis also revealed they plan to reduce the number of electronic dance acts.

He added: “EDM dance music is something that particularly appeals to a younger audience, and that’s something I think we will dial down.”

DF will stage the TRNSMT Festival, a non-camping event, on Glasgow Green on the normal T weekend of July 7-9 this year.
