Rangers lack leadership at EVERY level

SAYS DEREK FERGUSON

DEREK FERGUSON reckons Rangers could do with rounding up the legends to help add some steel to the club’s core.

The ex-Ibrox ace would love to see his brother Barry involved – along with other former stars who could give the place a shake.

Ferguson is bemused a new boss has yet to be named – even a short-term appointment until the summer – but he is hoping there will be room in the new set-up for former players who know the club inside out.

Record Sport columnist Barry has been linked with a role following his departure from Clyde and his older brother would love to see the Gers old guard having an input.

He said: “Could Barry be involved? Why not? But not just him – there are a number of ex-Rangers players who’ve dipped their toes into management and who could be brought into the set-up at Auchenhowie.

“I’d be happy to help out in some capacity. So would John Brown, Colin Hendry, Alex Rae, Marvin Andrews, Gordon Durie and countless others.

“They could all bring something to the table so why wouldn’t you have them involved? Other clubs do it with former players helping to run their academies.

“Rangers don’t have that and it bemuses me.

“Their experience is invaluable – you can’t buy that – so why not get them in?”

Ferguson believes it’s a shame some of the ex-Gers stars have hung up their boots as the team is crying out for character on the pitch.

He said: “Rangers are vulnerable. They have a soft centre.

“At home against Hamilton in the Scottish Cup you would fancy them but there is still a softness there.

“There are not too many guys within that group who show the hunger and desire of a 37-year-old Kenny Miller.

“They are nice, neat and tidy. That’s okay at home but when you step up a level and go to Tynecastle or Pittodrie, you need to play differently. You need more about you. A Stuart McCall type, they need leaders.”

Ferguson insisted the same applies at every layer of the club from the boardroom to the pitch.

He said: “You can say they lack leadership throughout the club, at every level.

“If you’re going to let the manager leave you’ve surely got to have something in place.

“If there are guys who are looking to come in on a short-term basis, guys that aren’t working, why not get them in? It’s not fair on Graeme Murty at the moment. Someone has to get in there to sort out that mess.”
