Deeks: I’m still major threat just like Kenny

DEREK RIORDAN is using Rangers veteran Kenny Miller as inspiration in a bid to bang in the goals for Edinburgh City that will put him back in the shop window.

The 34-year-old was an unused sub in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Cowdenbeath after joining the League Two side this week.

However, the ex-Hibs and Celtic striker – without a club since leaving National League outfit York City last summer – wants to prove he hasn’t lost his scoring touch when his chance comes.

And Riordan reckons fellow former Easter Road hitman Miller proves age isn’t a factor in front of goal.

He said: “I look at Rangers striker Kenny Miller still scoring goals and producing at the highest level at 37.

“That acts as my inspiration because if Kenny can still do it for Rangers then why can’t I?

“Kenny is arguably in the form of his life and his finishing is the best I’ve ever seen it during his career.”

City, seven points clear of bottom side Cowden, have scored the fewest goals of any side across all four divisions of the SPFL.

And Riordan, who netted more than 100 goals during two spells at Hibs, said: “I have never lost my ability to finish and I feel I can still do a decent job for someone given the chance.

“I’ve signed for Edinburgh City to prove I can still score goals. I am delighted to be back in football as I haven’t played since May.

“It gives me an opportunity to put myself back in the shop window and we’ll see what transpires from there.”

Riordan, who has signed a deal until the end of the season, revealed he turned down moves to Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands.

He added: “I have a young family now and I didn’t want the hassle of uprooting them to a foreign country.”
