A PRIMARY school head teacher ended up in hospital after being attacked by a pupil.

Janette Black was left “bloodied” by the assault at Springhill and Auchenback Primary in Barrhead, near Glasgow.

She had to attend the minor injuries unit at her local hospital after being set upon by a senior pupil on Tuesday.

The incident highlights the rising tide of violence in Scottish schools, where there have been almost 10,000 similar flashpoints in just three years.

A source said: “The head teacher was left bloodied and had to go to hospital after an attack.

“This is not the first time this headteacher has been attacked by a pupil. I am aware of other incidents over the last year where teachers have been injured.

“I fear it will be a matter of time before the violence escalates and a more serious incident occurs.”

An East Renfrewshire Council spokesman confirmed the attack.

He added: “No serious injuries were sustained and the member of staff involved did not require hospital treatment.

“However, she did attend a minor injuries unit as a precaution.

“Incidents of this nature are extremely rare in our schools and we have a zero-tolerance approach to violence at work.

“Any incident relating to violence which is reported to us is investigated thoroughly and the appropriate action taken.”

A police spokeswoman said they were unaware of the incident.

In January, a report revealed almost 10,000 teachers were attacked in Scotland’s schools over the past three years.

It came after it emerged compensation payments to teachers had doubled in 2016 to £608,000.

The latest figures came to light after the Scottish Lib Dems made a freedom of information request.

Teachers’ union the Educational Institute of Scotland said: “There is a persistent minority of pupils who often fail to behave to an appropriate standard in the classroom.”
