Sainsbury’s shake-up hits 4400
MORE than 4400 staff at Sainsbury’s have been left fearing for their jobs after bosses announced a store shake-up yesterday.
Around 4000 workers will be hit when night shifts are axed in 140 branches.
Some could be moved to early-morning or late-night shifts but face being paid less.
Sainsbury’s are also ditching one of two “bands” of staff who check prices, affecting 400 staff.
Julia Long, of the Unite union, urged bosses to give a guarantee to staff that there will be no compulsory redundancies.
She said: “This is very bad news for those dedicated workers affected by the planned job losses.
“Unite will be giving our members maximum support at this difficult time.”
Bosses have begun a consultation with staff and unions over the changes.
Sainsbury’s said: “We regularly review our business to ensure we’re operating as efficiently and effectively as possible so that we can provide our customers with the best possible service.
“Following a recent review, we are making some changes to administrative roles and night shift patterns in a number of stores, subject to consultation.
“We appreciate this will be a difficult time for those colleagues affected by the changes and will support them in any way we can.”
