THE mum of missing Scots RAF gunner Corrie McKeague yesterday called for an end to speculation over a man arrested in connection to the case.

Nicola Urquhart, 48, spoke out after a 26-year-old arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice was named as former special police constable Haydn Stephens.

He has been questioned and released on police bail until next month as police continue to investigate the disappearance of Corrie, who vanished in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

The 23-year-old gunner from Dunfermline was based at RAF Honington. He hasn’t been seen since he disappeared on September 24 after a night out.

A bin lorry belonging to waste firm Biffa was in the area where Corrie was last spotted but officers have found no evidence that he ended up in the vehicle.

It is understood that Stephens works as a traffic dispatcher for the firm and helps assign drivers to vehicles and routes.

Investigators revealed they had arrested Stephens in connection with the inquiry on Wednesday.

Nicola, of Dunfermline, posted on the Find Corrie page on Facebook: “Can I please remind everyone that although this gentleman was arrested, he is still at this time innocent.

“Most importantly, his family and friends have no responsibility or accountability for any of his actions or inactions.

“Please be mindful of this and refrain from trying to guess what he may or may not have done or said.

“The only people that need to know this information, at this time, are the police.

“Myself, Makeyan, Darroch and our family need to concentrate on the following weeks and the search of the landfill.”

A police operation to sift through rubbish up to 25ft high at a tip in Milton, Cambridgeshire, is due to begin within days.

The last signal from Corrie’s phone was on the route taken by bin lorries to the landfill site.
