I saw how policeman went down

- SALLY HIND

A FORMER Daily Record journalist has told how he watched in horror as an armed man attacked a policeman at Westminster.

Eyewitness Kevin Schofield, who is editor of website Politics Home, said he heard several rounds of gunfire after seeing the knifeman strike.

In the aftermath of yesterday’s attack, he told Sky News: “We heard a very loud bang outside the office. We were in the press gallery at Parliament.

“We looked out the window and there was a lot of shouting and men running around.

“I looked to my left at the Carriage Gates, which are heavily fortified. Someone looked like they rushed through, attacked a policeman and the policeman went down.

“Another policeman came to his rescue, then the man who had assaulted him got up. He appeared to be carrying either a knife or a gun.

“Then I heard gunfire, lots of gunfire – maybe five or six rounds. Then it got really quite panicky after that, as you can imagine.”

Kevin, from Falkirk but now living in London, said he believed the shots that followed were being fired at the attacker.

He added: “It was at an area called Carriage Gates, which are normally closed to the public – you can only get through with a security pass and there are armed police there.

“But someone rushed through that, got through the security gates and assaulted a policeman.

“I was watching it through the window, so I couldn’t hear what he was saying. He was walking towards the second policeman with his arm outstretched with what looked to be a knife in his hand, having already assaulted another one.

“Another policeman got him down on the ground.

“It was at that moment when you realise something serious was happening, that this man had broken into Parliament and had a weapon.”
