MIKEY DEVLIN reckons the battle for Premiership survival will go to the final day.

But the Hamilton skipper is hoping a derby win tonight can help ensure Accies aren’t in it.

Martin Canning’s men lifted themselves off the foot of the table last weekend with a 1-0 home win over St Johnstone.

Now Devlin wants to follow it up against Motherwell as Hamilton bid to string together a run of victories that will take them clear of danger.

The 23-year-old said: “You need to win three or four games to take yourself out of it. Partick Thistle have managed to do that and they’re flying.

“That is something everyone needs to do and if we don’t do that we are all going to be in it until the last day.

“I suppose that makes for an exciting end to the season but we don’t want to be part of it.

“We need to focus on our job, which is to win back-toback games.

“And if we manage to do that and put a run together that might lead us to secure our Premiership status for another year.”

With Motherwell sitting just a point above Accies tonight’s Fir Park clash will be pivotal in the survival scrap.

But Devlin insists the derby is massive irrespective of where the sides are in the table.

He said: “The league is still tight. Dundee are in eighth place and three points ahead of us. There is little in it and that is what one or two wins can do for you. A win over Motherwell would be massive.

“It is a derby – the fans want the win, the players and manager want the win.

“Forget what that does for you in the league – it is a big game anyway.”
