C4, 8pm BRITAIN’S biggest warship, HMS Ocean, is like a floating village. It has its own hospital, shop, police station, church, bank, laundry, gym and even pubs.

But, as explained by second-incommand Nick Wood: “It also has attack helicopters, explosives, and we go and bring violence to the enemy. It’s a village that makes war.”

Cameras have gained exclusive access to the ship and her 1000-strong crew, with particular focus on the 120 new recruits.

“I’ve come straight from school to this, it’s nerve-wracking,” says 17-year-old Keira, who looks so young in her Navy uniform as they set sail for dangerous waters.

HMS Ocean is beginning a sensitive seven-month active deployment, culminating in becoming the first-ever UK ship to lead a US task force in the Middle East.

Emergency equipment on board includes baby wipes, formula, bottles, baby grows and 600 disposable nappies, just in case migrant children need to be brought on board.

In the first episode, a weary HMS Ocean leaves Plymouth for the Mediterranean, but before long an engine breaks down. BROADCHURCH
