AN AIRPORT was evacuated and all flights axed after a “suspicious package” was found.

Leeds Bradford airport reopened after a “controlled explolsion”. HE’S played a serial killer and a tough-talking detective but Martin Compston says his hardman front will melt when he takes his seat at the Daily Record Our Heroes awards this week.

The Greenock actor says he is honoured to be attending the ceremony, labelling it one of the year’s most humbling events.

He said: “I’ve been fortunate enough to be invited to Our Heroes a few times over the years and each time I’ve been amazed at the people’s uplifting stories.

“I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to come along again.”

As well as being able to listen to our finalists’ remarkable stories of bravery, selflessness and courage, the event will be a new experience for Martin as he is up for an award.

Our Heroes recognises ordinary Scots who have done extraordinary things but also marks the outstanding achievements of our most talented performers in the fields of sport and showbiz.

This year, Martin has been nominated in our Entertainment Hero category after an outstanding 12 months that saw him lavished with public and critical acclaim.

Martin had the nation gripped with his chilling portrayal of Lanarkshire serial killer Peter Manuel in ITV drama In Plain Sight, while his role as DS Steve Arnott in the BBC’s Line of Duty has made him one of the UK’s most sought-after actors.

Despite being in demand, Martin said he couldn’t wait to fly back from his Los Angeles home to pay tribute to our inspiring and brave finalists.

He said: “It really does make you proud to be Scottish when you listen to the stories.

“These people have gone through so much or displayed unbelievable bravery, yet they are all at the ceremony wearing a smile on their face and full of humility.

“It is one of the most humbling evenings you will experience and I’m excited to be going.”

Martin told how one former finalist has become a firm friend – and was even an usher at his wedding to US model Tianna
