SCOTS SET TO ARROW IN ON WORLDTITLE

- CRAIG SWAN

ROBERT THORNTON says Scotland are ready to rule at the Betway World Cup in Frankfurt this week.

The Ayrshireman is backing Gary Anderson and Peter Wright to end the nation’s drought at the big one starting on Thursday.

Anderson is coming off victory in the World Series event in Dubai while Wright made the final of the Betway Premier League 10 days ago and has eight titles in the bag already this year.

Thornton said: “Scotland can win it as Gary and Peter are both in great form. But unlike any other tournament there are so many factors to consider – the format can catch players out and also being comfortable with your team-mate.

“It’ll be new for England having Dave Chisnall and Adrian Lewis. They’re used to having Phil Taylor and Adrian who are mates – that’s one reason why they’ve been so successful.

“Likewise the Dutch pair Michael van Gerwen and Ray van Barneveld are big pals so it’s easier for them to gel.

“Gary and Peter will need to settle into a rhythm and understanding. It worked for them two years ago when they got to the final.

“But both will want to hit the ground running against Singapore. There are no easy matches, trust me. We’ve been done by Spain twice and Northern Ireland.

“Every player is capable of turning anyone over but Gary and Peter are on fire right now. This is perhaps our time to rule the world. I really hope so.

“I don’t think we’ve ever had two players in the top three in the world in darts history. Gary’s win in Dubai was outstanding so he has it in his locker.

“Peter has been one of the most consistent players and got his first Major at the UK Open earlier this year.

“I just hope they click in Frankfurt. If they do, it could be a great few days for Scottish darts.”
