Gers close in on Dorr

- CRAIG SWAN

RANGERS are stepping up their bid to land Norwich City star Graham Dorrans.

The 30-year-old is leaving Carrow Road and Ibrox chiefs are working on a deal to sign the Scotland midfielder.

Manager Pedro Caixinha is back in his homeland but work has continued behind the scenes in Glasgow on securing the Portuguese gaffer’s targets.

Dorrans remains high on the hitlist and Record Sport understands talks are still ongoing with a view to a summer switch.

The playmaker would relish a return to Scotland and to join the club he supported as a kid

after nine years south of the border with West Brom and Norwich.

Carlos Pena is also on Rangers’ radar and Mexico legend Luis Garcia reckons Caixinha is the ideal man to relaunch the career of the party-loving player.

Leon midfielder Pena is in talks with the Ibrox club over a move to Scotland but has been forced to defend himself in his Mexico homeland over allegations he enjoys his social life off the pitch too much.

But former Atletico Madrid star Garcia – who won 79 caps and played at two World Cups for Mexico – feels a move to Scotland would be perfect for Pena.

He said: “Carlos has the chance to move away from a Mexican environment that has polluted him, although much of the contamination was done by himself.

“Not so long ago, he was the star man in Mexico. Everyone wanted their picture taken with him.

“But no matter how foolishly he has acted and how much his career has faded, he has suddenly been given another chance by Pedro Caixinha.

“Pedro is a cultured, innovative coach. He’s successful because he takes risks. He isn’t intimidated by the challenge of rehabilitating the career of Carlos Pena.

“Despite his troubles I firmly believe in Carlos. He is still a very good footballer who can control games.

“He was at one time the best Mexican player. He has shown it many times. He is a quality player.

“It would be a new start for him. I believe in him and so does Caixinha.”

Meanwhile, Caixinha’s Rangers will face The New Saints next month as part of the Welsh champions’ Scottish training camp.
