Rickie coming to Scotland for another crown

- EUAN McLEAN

US OPEN pacesetter Rickie Fowler has signed up to the star-studded cast set to compete at the Scottish Open.

The American’s pledge to play at Dundonald next month is another huge boost for the tournament in a week that also saw world No.2 Rory McIlroy count himself in.

Other big names Adam Scott and reigning Open champion Henrik Stenson will also be making the event in Ayrshire – taking place from July 13-16 – the final preparations for their bid to win the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale the following week.

Now Fowler, who won the Scottish Open title at Gullane in 2015 just two months after winning the prestigious Players Championship for the first time, will be seeking another big win. And after the start he made to this week’s US Open at Erin Hills, there’s every chance the 28-year-old could be arriving in Scotland as a freshly crowned Major champion.

Fowler said: “I’m really looking forward teeing it up at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open again.

“I had to dig deep on the final day for the win back in 2015, and it rounded off a special week for me in front of the Scottish fans.

“It’s a tournament that I enjoy being part of, and I’m looking forward to playing Dundonald for the first time.

“The aim for me is to win another title as well as getting in a good week of links golf in preparation for The Open Championship.”
